According to the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA), noise is one of the most common hazards in the workplace. In Germany, four to five million employees are exposed to noise that can damage their hearing. This is especially true for workplaces such as construction sites, where high noise levels are often unavoidable.
The noise caused by work and the environment on construction sites can lead to:
- Health problems such as noise-induced hearing loss in construction workers
- Stress and poor mental health in both workers and local residents
- Higher accident risks and lower productivity
adverse effects on migration patterns and other natural behaviours of wildlife
Our eBook addresses some of the key issues around noise levels in the construction and demolition industries. It suggests some simple ways that companies, site managers, health and safety and environmental health and safety professionals can measure, monitor and manage their noise levels.
The eBook goes into more detail on this topic, but here are a few basic tips on how to ensure noise protection on a construction site.
Measure, measure, measure!
By carefully measuring the noise levels at your construction site, you can evaluate the noise impact on your employees and the environment and take the necessary action. With accurate measurements, you can determine the daily noise exposure level (LEX,8h) based on an eight-hour shift and the peak sound pressure level (LpC,peak), which is the maximum value of the instantaneous sound pressure level. Based on these values, you can take the following noise protection measures:
- Hearing protection for your employees
- Sound barriers
- Define and mark out noisy areas
- Maintenance and care of equipment and machinery
We have a range of products that make it easy to measure noise on construction sites.
