The École Nationale d’Arts et Métiers (ENSAM) in Bordeaux-Talence is a leading French institution in industrial sciences, training numerous students annually in different workshops.
These workshops replicate real industrial environments, featuring equipment such as laser cutting machines, welding stations, and metalworking tools.
However, the noise generated by these activities poses significant health and safety risks for both students and staff. Workshop manager Mr Jaupart explains:
“We operate in a typical industrial workshop, similar to those found in large companies or even small businesses.”
Raising Awareness of Noise Risks
Ms Ballistreri, Health & Safety Manager, emphasises that the biggest challenge is to raise awareness of the noise risk among pupils and staff: ‘’The challenge is to become aware of the impact of the risk on hearing and health, whether it is intensive or prolonged exposure.’’
To tackle this challenge, the school installed two SoundSign Noise Warning Signs in its workshops. These signs measure noise levels in real-time and trigger a visual alert when the 80-decibel threshold is exceeded.
Ms Ballistreri explains:
“We chose the SoundSign to comply with regulations and keep noise levels below 80 decibels. What I liked about it is the visual aspect. It is engaging and very clear.
However, effective communication with students is crucial so they understand what the sign represents and why it is important to respond to alerts.”
Necessary Adjustments and Future Improvements
The Soundsigns have also been repositioned for better efficiency. “We recently moved one of our SoundSigns to place it in the best possible line of sight, above a particularly noisy machine that everyone complains about,” says Mr Jaupart.
Despite these improvements, the team acknowledges that education remains key to maximising the effectiveness of the devices. Ms Ballistreri emphasises: “We have over 300 students each year, it is essential to enhance communication so they fully understand the purpose of the system.”
A Solution Adaptable to Other Environments
Based on this experience, ENSAM Bordeaux recommends the SoundSign for any organisation facing noise challenges. Ms Ballistreri says:
“I recommend the SoundSign for specific work areas where noise management is critical”
Mr Jaupart adds: “Even in an educational setting, we use noisy industrial equipment. Protecting our users remains a top priority.”
The campus also plans to strengthen student awareness with additional educational materials, further enhancing the effectiveness of the system.
If you operate in a noisy work environment, the SoundSign can help you measure your noise environment and protect your teams effectively.
